As I overcame the sandy hill, the vista that spread before me was discouraging. Nothing but cacti and brush strewn across my field of vision, as far as the eye could see. In my haste to reach the next landmark, I had failed to take into consideration the disappointment that might occur if it didn’t enter my sight immediately after I crested that obstacle. I sketched a primitive compass rose in the sand. Aligning myself with the arrow north, I put one foot directly in front of the other, leaving a line of footprints stretching northward. At that moment, a chill wind picked up from the west, shifting the top layer of sand and causing the stiff brush to flail about. I continued north with sharp determination, steeling myself against the cold.
